canning

Over the weekend I rounded up the girls in my family who could come for a day of canning peaches. Canning is something that I remember my mother doing often while I was growing up. She would can the peaches from the tree in our backyard, make jam from my grandmother's large raspberry patch, and, my favorite of all, bottle concord grape juice.

We had grape vines all along our back fence and I would watch with concern for our supply as the neighbors horses tried to nip the bunches off the vines. I can still remember the delicious smell as we harvested them when they were ripe. We drank homemade grape juice every Sunday.

So now that I am older I want to learn all I can to continue this tradition of homegrown bottled food, and I want my kids to have similar memories to my own. Especially since we inherited two large apple trees and one very large pear tree (badly in need of pruning, we are hoping we can bring it back to health) in our new backyard.

I am thinking we need to plant some concord grapes, and a peach tree too...

Do you can anything?

  1. mmm..this looks so yummy! do you think you could post a tutorial one day on the canning process? No one in my family cans and it has always fascinated me. Such a beautiful tradition to continue with your family:)

  2. The idea of canning always seemed nice to me- but I don't have any fruit bearing anything in my yard. Those seems like a lot of peaches though! I don't know if my family would ever eat that many...definitely seems like a nice gift to friends :)

    1. All of these bottles were divided among our family, that would be a lot to eat. ;) I bought the cases of peaches at a local farm stand, so even if you don't have fruit trees you can still can if you want to try it out!

  3. My grandma has a raspberry patch & apple trees on her property in Utah. I grew up canning with her, my mom & aunts. With a recent move across the country, canning with them will no longer be a summer tradition. But my birthday is right around the corner & I'm asking for canning supplies so I can start this tradition with my own kids.
